      Friday 14 September, CNES President Jean-Yves Le Gall held a press conference at the agency’s Head Office in Paris Les Halles to set out the key challenges that will face the space exploration missions marking the end of this year, as well as future exploration missions to be pursued through ESA programmes and international partnership efforts. He was accompanied at the briefing by scientists working on the Hayabusa2/MASCOT, BepiColombo and InSight mission teams.

      “I’m from Alsace in Northeast France and a keen mountaineer, so I wasn’t really pre-destined for studying the ocean!” says Audrey Hasson with a smile. On 12 October, the young CNES post-doctoral research scientist was awarded a L’Oréal-UNESCO for Women in Science grant. She is currently pursuing research work at the LOCEAN* laboratory on ocean surface salinity, using satellite and in-situ data.

      Alexandre Couhert, an engineer working in the orbit determination department at the Toulouse Space Centre, has received a COSPAR Outstanding Paper Award for Young Scientists for his paper Towards the 1 mm/y stability of the radial orbit error at regional scales published recently in the journal Advances in Space Research.

      Unlike the mythological figure from which it takes its name, the French-U.S. Calipso mission dedicated to studying clouds and aerosols hasn’t waited 10 years to release its precious information. Less than 1 year after launch, science data gathered by the satellite are already available to the international scientific community.
